Bartok is my favorite composer... you are right, he was very lyrical; to some ears it just takes time. I too did a lot of composing in college (of percussion music) and my stuff was heavily influenced by Bartok and Harry Partch.

This is a wonderful recording; you can hear everything and brings a new appreciation for the piece. And yes, this is an incredible rip from a 78!!

Thanks for sharing!!!!

You're right. A mistake on my part. Although I seem like the vocals more than you do. Maybe they are an acquired taste. I changed the genre to pop and progressive rock which is closer but not necessarily entirely on the mark

Have to disagree with Anon and Zyb... This project was on heavy rotation last summer for me.. I thought it was a excellent concept and I dug wildabeast's flow.. I also am a diehard Portishead fan and I dont feel like it violated anything.. In fact lets look at all the hiphop songs that have sampled portishead in the past that were just terrible.. This was a breath of fresh air for me...

Actually I was talking about my own early attempt at copying Bartok's style of composition. Bartok doesn't make any mistakes but I sure did.

And I would love to get a hold of a recording of that recital you linked to!

Mistakes? No such thing in Bartok's book.
http://www.classicalnotes.net/reviews/szigeti.html
The style is no longer familiar and takes considerable adjustment for modern ears. At first, it sounds sour. Fingers and toes can be exhausted in a matter of seconds keeping count of all the "wrong" notes. But are they really wrong? Not at all. As with blue notes in jazz or microtones in blues, this music yields to emotion. The bent notes are not mistakes, but rather the expressive means by which the artists convey their unbounded feelings.

Both of em are counting as quite big ;)
The singer is Darren Hayes, who has a long record history (Lead singer of Savage Garden).
We Are Smug is a side project of him and his life partner.

Great idea embedding a player - old farts like me might end up listening to stuff they wouldn't normally touch with the proverbial!

Thanks for the Mojo Nixon pointer. I already have most of these from when I was an eMusic Unlimited subscriber, but they are all 128kbps, while the Amazon versions are higher quality. So, I get an upgrade.

All of the info on this blog is much appreciated!

No, actually is a melodica, something that I use as my fake bandoneon (since the bandoneon it's an instrument that I don't play & the little game is that I should make noise with all my toys= the melodica is the closest thing). Bye Marvin, Claudio

Thank you for your comments, I like to add that the small ensemble is not live or "ensemble" since I play all the instruments, but the process is very much free improvisations that pile one instrument after another in real time improvisations (with myself to paraphrase those beatiful Bill Evans albums). I also work with compositions written down, but those albums are not on line. Hugs from Buenos Aires, Claudio

I've never enjoyed hip hop, but on your recommendation, I'm going to check this out.

Besides, if it weren't for you, I never would have discovered Diablo Swing Orchestra.

Man, Marvin, you always come through. I wish people would comment more often, because you deserve to know what a good and consistent job you're doing.

I was wondering: could you post a list of your favourite albums you're highlighted over the years? I'm curious what you feel are the best. Plus, it would probably serve as a good introduction to new people to your lovely blog.

Best regards,
Kurt
