The Sounds of Taraab - Zanzibar, New York
Taraab is a form of music out of Zanzibar and coastal Eastern Africa. It uses African rhythm and Swahili lyrics but is heavily influenced by Arabic and Indian popular music. The New York based Sounds of Taraab placed their debut album Zanzibar, New York on the Free Music Archive and it is a virtual downpour of exotic rhythms and sensuous lyrics. The five person ensemble uses such instruments as accordion, percussion, and oud, along with a good vocalist, to offer up a tantalizing blend of African and Mid East sounds. Highly recommended to anyone interested in world music.
