Robin Grey - Only The Missile
Robin Grey’s debut album Only The Missile will please those music fans who like British folk rock hovering between the lyrical, the traditional and the confessional. His style reminds me very much of Nick Drake or Robyn Hitchcock, but the songs have the masterful pathos of Leonard Cohen. There’s a sound of regret on the best tracks such as the wistful “Swan Song”. “Five” and “Every Waking Hour” are two other exceptional songs that are mid-tempo and melancholy. “Somewhere” includes background vocals by one of my new favorite singers Ruth Theodore. Robin Grey is another excellent singer / songwriter that should enjoy a fruitful future with a little help from the music gods.
The albums is available from Jamendo in VBR MP3.

I really love Jamendo, I just wish there was a really good way to browse it and easily find these gems - oh wait, there is, it’s your blog! ;)
as always, thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I know what you mean. It’s almost impossible to keep up with all the Jamendo releases. It’s just too easy to miss a good album.

Hey Marvin
Thanks for your review - I seem to have made it into the most popular section bit of Jamendo ‘folk’ this week as a result :-)
FYI - although not credited anywhere except in the cd sleeve, I played double bass and mandolin on Ruth’s album as well as mucking in with arranging, writing and engineering.
She is a rare talent indeed and I learnt a great deal from working with her :-)
Best wishes
Robin
