Michael Burgess - Paper Flowers

Michael Burgess could easily be classified in the newer category of indie pop or emo but my aged ears are attracted to influences of 60s folk rock. I am immediately drawn to the same qualities I hear in Tim Buckley (and yes, his son Jeff too). His album Paper Flowers offers poetic music that is acoustic with a little jazz feeling. “St James Hotel” is a good example as vocal and guitar dance around tabla-like percussion and a dancing flute. Burgess’ lyrics are gentle and memorable. The singer/songwriter is best experienced on the tracks that are simply guitar and vocal such as “Apple Seeds” and “Nothing’s Going My Way” but other songs are nicely if sparsely orchestrated. This is one of the finer folk-pop albums you will find on the internet.

Paper Flowers is available, along with 4 “b-sides” tracks, in 192kbps MP3.

  1. This is a really wonderful album. Even by this blog’s usual high standards, this one is a standout.
