Gultskra Artikler aka Alexey Devyanin fills his compositions with copious amounts of mechanical sounds, field recordings, crowd noise and other things while framing it in a world of melodic riffs and fragmented tones. It makes for a dazzling but quietly restful array of sounds. Rather than being meditative like many ambient endeavours, his music stimulates the senses with unpredictable and unusual aural combinations.

Of the five featured albums, all online and legally free, Moreprodukt may be a good place to start. The ten tracks offer intriguing glimpses into Artikler’s fluid approach to musical assemblage. On the first track, “Gafilter”, various noises weave in and out as you detect a possible musical theme resembling the pounding on pots and pans. Throughout the work Artikler continues this collage of sound while teasing with a hint of melody. The result is a soundscape that plays with tones and noise until the two become the same. The other tracks follow this theme, all embellishing on the same style but each being unique.

Razmer Nosa 46 is slightly over 12 minutes long but its single track provides an extended variation on Devyanin’s building of tension between the tonal and the atonal. A rollicking bass riff and driving percussion are only part of the scheme that drives this feast of sounds. This extended track makes for a imaginative catalyst for your dreams.

Ethnic Live 2004 is , as the title implies, a live session. The three tracks, labeled as “scenes”, totals 54 minutes of unrelenting sounds with more rhythmic intensity than his previous albums. It is again a fascinating collage.

Which leaves us with Gololed (and Gruppa Turistov, two releases off the excellent Thinner / Autoplate netlabel. The label describes Gruppa Turtov as “Siberian Cutup Neofolk” while Gololed is perhaps more accurately defined as “Radical Siberian Avantgarde”. In fact, the track “Polojite” sounds very much like avant garde jazz. Both albums continue Gultskra Artikler’s efforts to turn a wide array of sound into an articulate and satisfying whole.
