The Bastard Fairies are the type of artists that you either love instantly or end up listening to their CD several times saying “What the ?” until it creeps into your brain like a drug. I am in the latter group. Their music at first sounds innocent and simple but is full of dark corners and irony. Think of children lullabys sung by P.J. Harvey and you might get an inkling of this meeting of opposites.

Memento Mori features 12 tracks of sweet and sour music that charms on the surface but invites deeper examination. “Apple Pie” is sweet and melodic but the lyrics are neurotic and pessimistic. “Habitual Inmate” has a harder edge and ends up as the best track on the album. Other tracks like “You Are Going To Hell” display droll social satire with a sharp wit. The Bastard Fairies have created a wonderfully different debut recording.
